Is today the day we change the Government?
I hope so...

Today the Democrats regain control of Congress after a long, painful period in which the legislature was dominated by a Republican agenda. Of course, switching parties is as meaningful as changing the color of your clothes, unless there is truth and effect to the promise given to the American people to make a difference.

In 1994, Republicans under Newt Gingrich promised a “Contract with America,” an agenda which was designed to put forth a slew of conservative ideas and strongly affect (and clean up) government. As we know, nearly every item that passed through the House, died in the Senate or on the president’s desk, and those that did become law were severely modified.

Perhaps the best lesson we can learn from all this, is that the new Democratically controlled Congress needs to work with its Republican brethren. Sure, there are members so conservative, that they will never compromise on the far-right Republican ideals. But, with compromise and agreement from more moderate members of the party, real, long-lasting change can be enacted. Alienating Republican members will merely perpetuate the same stupidity we have experienced the last decade, when it was thrust upon us.

Can we learn from Republican mistakes? I’m not so sure after reading how the Democratic leadership seems to be pushing their agenda, without any regard to Republican Congressman or Senators. The Congress is a very diverse body, which is extremely complicated and wrought with schisms, potential defectors and politicians who will reverse the position on issues, if given enough incentive. Rather than force through their agenda, Democrats need to work with Republicans and build consensus, otherwise any agenda they promulgate, will have they same long-lasting effect as the “Contract with America.”
